Abstract. The article is devoted to the theme of the mythologizing of Tsar Ivan IV in the Russian historical thought. The author emphasizes the existence of two fundamentally opposing myths (so called «liberal» and «hyperconservative»). In modern public history and historical journalism as well as popular scientific literature, and, especially, journalism, these myths are actually pushed valid information about the fate and deeds of the first Russian Tsar out. Karamzin’s vision of Ivan IV as a complex, ambiguous and, in many cases, tragic figure is in the process of disappearance.
Key words: Tsar, Ivan IV, a historical myth, Russian history, political history of the XVI century, mass historical consciousness, the oprichnina.
