Abstract. Contemporary cultural situation is characterized by such contradictory but complementary tendencies as integration and diversification, which are also characteristic of Russia . Integration leads to dissemination of the global mass culture unifying people by consumption of the same cultural products and by influence of the same images and stereotypes. On the other hand, diversification increases the number and variety of cultural communities, creates new cultural landscapes, identities and divides. The article analyses the current theoretical and practical conflicts between conservatism and innovation, security and development in cultures and arts on Russian territory and elsewhere.
