On the possible interpretations of religious sculpture of the Vaygach Island

Abstract. The article reviews possible morphological features and semantic interpretations of the religious sculpture from the sanctuaries of the Vaygach Island, which had communicative functions and served as a link between mortals and deities. Nenets considered it to be a special material manifestation of spirits in their sanctuaries.

Key words: sanctuaries of the Vaygach island, Nenets culture, shamanism, idol, syadey.
