Chekhov or not Chekhov? On the interpretations by Yekaterinburg theaters

Abstract. This article gives us an analysis of the performances based on Chekhov`s plays. Two first performances (Kolyada theatre, Center of Contemporary Drama) prove that postmodern-positivist renovation of classic text leads to their travesty and loss of sense. Such interpretations disvalue Chekhov`s style of perceiving and describing human nature. The third performance over against two firs ones reveals Chekhov`s world and the diversity of the semantics.

Key words: Chekhov, theatre, classic text, interpretation, travesty, dialogue, tradition, contradiction, semantics.
