Abstract. This article studies a foreign for Russia approach to health and safety issues regarding museum collections. This approach is focused on substances and materials presented in museum objects that can harm human health. The article gives a list of the most hazardous materials and substances, studies in brief the history of their use, discusses possible harm to health they can cause and describes the most general ways to reduce risks.
This article was presented at the scientific conference of graduate students and young specialists called «Nature and culture – the environment of human life: promising research» that was held in the January of 2020 at the Federal State Budget Scientific Research Institute «Russian Scientific and Research Institute of Cultural and Natural Heritage named after D.S. Likhachev «.
