Abstract. The article deals with issues related to the definition of the concept of ‘culture’ in the case of the crucial meta-theories in foreign sociology. The sociological concepts of culture, developed by P. Sorokin, T. Parsons, M. Archer and K. Geertz in anthropology, were analyzed as representative ones. It is shown that the concept of culture is directly linked to developing the theoretical approaches of scientists and vary widely. It is noted that there is no developed criteria for the definition of the conceptual culture apparatus in the sociological discipline.
Key words: sociological theory of culture, definition of culture, cultural anthropology, cultural and social systems, culture and agency, interpretation of cultures, Pitirim Sorokin, Talcott Parsons
