Abstract. The article is dedicated to life and works of Nikolai Bakhtin (1896–1950), who was a brother of the well known literature theorist Mikhail Bakhtin. The works of Nikolai Bakhtin achieved notoriety after his death, and the study of his legacy has just begun. However, the first related publications demonstrate his influence both on English and Russian philosophy and culture.

Key words: Ancient Greek mythology, antinomy of culture, agon, intelligencia, Russian emigration, L. Wittgenstein
