Absrtact. We analyze the functions of the allegory in the sermons of the famous 15th-century Italian preacher and public figure Girolamo Savonarola. Employing the traditional method of the medieval allegorical and moral exegesis of the Holy Scripture, Savonarola adapts it to his own aims of morally and politically restructuring Florentine society.
Allegory in his sermons becomes subjective as a result, turning into an instrument for shaping reality and a means of influencing his audience. It becomes a key tool and the exclusive method for interpreting not only Holy Scripture but also history, surrounding reality and human life as a whole.
Key words: allegory, medieval sermon, Girolamo Savonarola, medieval exegesis
