UDC 316.4+379.851 Zhitenev S. The main directions of development of religious pilgrimage and tourism and their role in mitigating social tensions in Russian society Abstract. The article presents the stages of revival of religious pilgrimage and tourism in the Russian Federation in post-Soviet period, as well as the main directions of development of these various and interrelated activities. Some of the socio-cultural mechanisms of development of pilgrimage as an ancient religious tradition are analyzed. The author discusses the role of religious pilgrimage and tourism in mitigating social tensions in Russian society.
