Abstract. The paper analyses the ways of representing the wars of the past in mass cinema. Russian feature films of 1911–2011 are in the focus of consideration. The author uses the concept of cultural memory proposed by Jan Assman but in the context of wider approach to the mediatising events of the Past that are meant to be kept in memory. Conclusions concern the historical types of hence constructed “heroic Past” images and their potential for creation of national identity in different periods of Russian and Soviet history.
