Abstract. The article analyzes the process of the emergence of the Eurasian near Abroad in the post-Soviet space at the end of the 20th century and the role of Soviet national policy in it. Based on historical documents and materials, the works of the leaders of the Soviet Union, the political, economic, and ethnocultural foundations of the collapse of the USSR and the formation of independent national republics are considered. The view of the Near Abroad not only as a geopolitical phenomenon, but also the multifaceted post-Soviet heritage of its member countries and peoples, as well as Russia, determines the relevance of its study.
